BMW's inconsistency regarding road map updates

Navigation plays a larger role in daily driving than most people realize. Clear directions create confidence, reduce stress, and support a more relaxed drive. BMW navigation systems bring together precision and ease, but the experience depends on accurate map data.

Why updated Navigation Maps matter according to BMW

BMW map data shapes many features inside your vehicle. Updated routes help your BMW guide you through construction zones, new developments, and revised roads. Even small changes in local traffic patterns can influence your trip.

When your map data is current, your BMW forms better recommendations for travel times and routing paths. Updated information can also support driver assistance features that depend on accurate mapping. This contributes to a refined and confident driving experience.

BMW recommends updating maps at least once a year, with frequent drivers benefiting from updates every three to six months. Remarkably The recommendation of BMW comes with no car's age restriction.

Up to 40% of road networks can change annually

Updating BMW roadmaps ensures accurate navigation, as up to 40% of road networks can change annually. Updates incorporate new roads, roundabouts, and altered traffic directions, while improving POI (points of interest) data. Regular updates prevent routing errors, optimize travel times by utilizing new infrastructure, and are often necessary for accurate speed limit displays.
Key reasons to keep  BMW navigation maps updated:

  • Accurate Routing: Incorporates new roads, highway bypasses, and changes to traffic direction, preventing the navigation from sending you to non-existent roads.
  • Time-Saving: Identifies new, faster routes and avoids outdated road closures or traffic congestion.
  • Updated Points of Interest (POIs): Adds thousands of new locations, such as restaurants, gas stations, and hotels.
  • Optimized Performance: Updates often fix mapping errors from previous versions.
  • Enhanced Functionality: Updated maps support better performance for driver assistance systems, such as speed limit information (KAFAS/SLI), which rely on accurate road data.

How often does BMW release Map Updates?

BMW releases automatic map updates several times per year. For manual updates, you can download fresh map data whenever you need it. Drivers who travel across expanding areas, active construction zones, or new developments may update more often. Each update strengthens route accuracy and travel confidence.

Reliability of BMW regarding the availability of map updates

BMW's reliability regarding map updates is generally high for new vehicles with active subscriptions, but it is highly unreliable for older models. BMW doesn't provide a clear release calendar for road maps and it's unclear whether a BMW owner can expect a next road map update.

BMW AG lacks commitment to providing map updates for recent BMW models with older generation navigation systems. Experiences show that not all BMW models receive a new types of navigation system during the manufacturing period. As a result, BMW owners who purchase such a model during the final delivery period are disadvantaged by BMW AG, as map updates are no longer provided after a few years.

Average technical lifespan of BMW cars is up to 15 years

With proper maintenance, BMW's typically last 150,000 to 200,000 miles (240.000 to 320000 kilometers), equating to a technical lifespan up to 15 years. And a technical lifespan of 20 years is not an exception. So commitment of BMW to cover the whole technical lifespan with road map updates is a reasonable expectation.

BMW in-dash navigation systems become effectively worthless over time

BMW in-dash navigation systems  become effectively worthless due to outdated road maps, leading to missing new roads, incorrect traffic data, and poor routing,

  • Outdated Data: Maps lack new addresses, subdivisions, and changed highway connections.
  • Poor Routing: Older systems may, unnecessarily,  lack reliable Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) from BMW ,  leading to missed detours or proposed routes that are not optimal.
  • Lack of Support: In some regions, map updates for older CCC systems (common in pre-2010 vehicles) may have stopped around 2018–2019. For CIC and NBT systems it seems no road map updates will be available beyond 2025 but official communication from BMW is lacking.

Restore RTTI on BMW navigation systems after 3G sunset

The loss of RTTI (Real-Time Traffic Information) in connected (e.g. BMW) vehicles due to the 3G sunset is primarily caused by the discontinuation of 3G cellular networks by mobile carriers, which directly affects manufacturer's connected services. Read on for a solution if RTTI and other connected services stop working.

Restore eCall and Real Time Traffic Information today

What happened?

2G and 3G Network Shutdown: Mobile carriers globally phased out 2G and 3G networks to make room for newer technologies like 4G and 5G. Connected vehicles that relied on older (eg 2G/3G) telematics hardware lost connectivity to services like RTTI, BMW Assist, Remote Services, and more.

Hardware Limitations: Many connected cars built before 2017 were equipped with 3G-based telematics units. According to manufacturers, these units can't be upgraded to 4G due to hardware and software constraints.
Read on if RTTI and other connected services stop working for a solution!

No Retrofit Path: Many connected car manufacturers (e.g. BMW) have not foreseen a  retrofit or upgrade path for most affected vehicles. This means owners of older models can't renew connected services offered by the car manufacturer once 3G support ends.

What is the solution or alternative?

Navituning has proven that statements of BMW regarding cellular sunsets are unnecessary, inaccurate and most of all customer unfriendly. For many BMW models, 4G compatible telematic units  (TCU) are available world wide which proves BMW (aftersales) isn't totally honest regarding cellular sunsets. And in case a 4G telematic unit isn't available, most of the ConnectedDrive services can be restored via paired mobile phones.

Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) can be easily restored/retrofitted for all BMW models with navigation system professional delivered from mid-2012 with at least (factory) options 609 and 633+6VC/6NS/6NH.

BMW avoids responsibility with Cellular sunsets

Newer cellular technologies are released by cellular carriers to support customers with their needs to stay connected. Older cellular technologies are being replaced by newer technologies, and everyone who owns a smartphone is aware that the development of smartphones is in balance with the introduction of new cellular technologies.

Car manufacturers of connected cars don't understand their position

Car manufactures have proudly introduced connected cars last decade. However car manufactures like BMW don't seem to understand that introducing cellular technogies into cars does make a car manufacturer responsible to keep the cellular technology of the car up to date to make sure the car will stay connected during the whole life cycle of the car. Qualcomm chips [2] used in BMW telematics units do have compatible LTE (4G) versions since 2010. So today there shouldn't be any problem regarding the 2G/3G sunsets at all.

BMW telematics units do have compatible LTE (4G) versions since 2010

With the upcoming 3G sunset BMW is taking a different path. The same path which BMW took with the 2G sunset. BMW seems to feel limited responsibility and the cellular sunsets are, according to BMW, in the first place a problem of the person who owns the BMW.

The decision to phase out 3G network technology was made at the discretion of the respective cellular carriers and lies beyond the control of BMW. [1]

A hardware or software retrofit to upgrade the vehicle telematics is not available.[2]

There is currently no available hardware or software alternatives which extend the functionality beyond the 3G shutdown for affected vehicles.[3]

Some BMW owners are lucky, others are not seen

However, some BMW, Rolls Royce and Mini owners are lucky in case BMW does offer a free technology upgrade. Others are abandoned by BMW. BMW isn't clear why two cars which share the same technology and Integration Level (iLevel) can't be upgraded both with new technology. The manufacturer (Valeo / Peiker) of the telematic units, very submissive to BMW AG,  has done an excellent job, because the telematic units are either exchangeable or upgradeable [4] by exchanging the riser board of the telematics unit as a low cost solution to support newer cellular technologies like LTE.

The absolute low point has been reached by BMW in class-act procedure (22-cv-06103) where a loyal BMW, Rolls Royce or Mini owner feels compelled to take legal action against BMW regarding its responsibility regarding cellular sunsets [6]. BMW has chosen to further frustrate the relationship with affected BMW, Rolls Royce and Mini owners by referring to the ConnectedDrive contract with: "3G Telematics Plaintiff Signed ‘Unambiguous' Arbitration Pact, Says BMW". BMW referring solely to the ConnectedDrive contract regarding cellular sunsets is very disrespectful because (involved) communication technology is not an integral part of the ConnectedDrive contract, but is an integral part of the car.

BMW frustrates loyal customers with a connectivity device worth 800 US dollars.

For decades, BMW has cultivated a reputation for engineering excellence, driving performance, and premium ownership experiences. BMW customers are not merely buyers; they are loyal enthusiasts who associate the brand with innovation and prestige. However, recent controversies surrounding a USD 800 telecommunications-related and easy to replace device have sparked unnecessary frustration among loyal BMW owners, highlighting a growing tension between technological advancement and customer satisfaction.

What the pure fact say

Based upon pure facts it's odd why BMW AG isn't supporting BMW, Rolls Royce and Mini owners with upcoming 3G cellular sunset. BMW is the manufacturer of the whole vehicle and has a responsibility too. Cellular sunsets are early planned into the future by the cellular carriers, so it's weird that BMW AG is clearly hiding behind the decision of cellular carriers and ConnectedDrive contract. It's very weird that BMW has declared that the situation is beyond the control of BMW AG, because from November 2016 (16-11) 4G is supported with the iLevels and required technology upgrades do have a part number at BMW and can be ordered and activated with ISTA (module replacement) by any BMW service organisation (SIB 84 02 21). The old telematics unit (TCB/ATM/Combox) has to be exchanged with ISTA guided module replacement procedure to make sure the VIN of the new telematics unit does match with the VIN of the BMW and the correct IMEI is registered at the BMW back end to enable ConnectedDrive services for the new 4G telematics unit.

Background

A 4G TCB/ATM might need a software update [5] in case it's affected by the 3G cellular technology discontinuation. Certain ConnectedDrive services for this vehicle, including BMW Assist eCall, will be affected and no longer be available at that time. Unfortunately BMW AG is not explaning the whole truth regarding eCall and cellular sunsets. In case a compatible telematics unit isn't available for a region, this is simply caused by BMW AG not ordering the version at Peiker. The technology is generally available but lacks focus and sense of responsibility at the side of the ConnectedDrive team at BMW AG.

Conclusion

It's clear that BMW actively avoids responsibility with Cellular sunsets and most likely the only reason is that BMW wants to sell new BMW's only. ConnectedDrive aftersales support is clearly unreliable regarding cellular sunsets. It is sad that the collective interests of loyal BMW, Rolls Royce and Mini owners are not seen and looked after by BMW AG, despite required technology is available with a material cost of USD 800. BMW AG's current approach can be summarised as an unwillingness to ensure, with or without financial contribution from the owner, that a connected car remains connected for its entire economic and technical lifespan.

BMW discontinues ConnectedDrive services with 3G cellular sunset in Canada

In Canada, the 3G network is being phased out by major mobile carriers, with a sunset date of  July 31, 2025. This means that devices relying solely on 3G technology will lose their cellular connectivity after this date. Carriers like Rogers, Fido, and Vidéotron will discontinue their 3G services on July 31, 2025. Bell and Telus are also expected to sunset their 3G networks by the end of 2025. This has caused that BMW Canada (Part of BMW AG) removed support for BMW ConnectedDrive cars which depend on sunsetted/inactive (eg 2G/3G) cellular networks. Ecall won't be available anymore, so involved BMW's won't be able to alert emergency services automatically in case of an emergency or accident. BMW is generally avoiding global consequences  of the phasing out of 2G/3G mobile network technologies, as the company states that it has no control over this situation without looking at itself.

BMW ConnectedDrive Services and Apps rely on the embedded SIM card in your BMW and certain vehicles require connectivity via a 3G mobile network operated by third party telecommunications providers. The Mobile Network Operators (“MNOs”) providing 3G services in Canada plan to retire their 3G services by 31 July 2025.

As a result, BMW ConnectedDrive Services and Apps will be impacted on certain vehicles, and will ease to function for reasons beyond BMW’s control.

BMW Australia quietly disallows ConnectedDrive services

The imminent (June 2024) retirement of the 3G network in Australia has caused that BMW Australia (Part of BMW AG) silently removed support for BMW ConnectedDrive cars which depend on sunsetted/inactive (eg 2G/3G) cellular networks. Ecall won't be available anymore, so involved BMW's won't be able to alert emergency services automatically in case of an emergency or accident. BMW is generally avoiding global consequences of the phasing out of 2G/3G mobile network technologies, as the company states that it has no control over this situation without looking at itself.
